From myExperiment

Hello Carl

Carole Goble and I are currently writing a proposal to seek further funding for the myExperiment project (info about the project itself can be found on http://wiki.myexperiment.org). The proposal will make far more extensive use of ORE than our current support (currently we use it to export our “packs” – but we want to make it much more of a first class citizen in myExperiment and our other “e-laboratory” projects). I had a chance to talk to Simeon in Indianaopolis and I’m looking forward to the next phase of ORE as support and tooling grows.

The outline of our bid is attached, and I’m writing to ask if you would be able to provide a letter of support please? The myExperiment project has been funded by JISC and we are bidding for two years further funding under the heading of “repository enhancement” – to enhance the myExperiment repository and its integration with other repositories (including EPrints with Les Carr in Southampton, and Fedora in Manchester). Hence your letter will be particularly salient and we hope these enhancements will benefit you and the ORE community – we welcome your thoughts (as well as your letter – we don’t ask for much! :) as we may be able to take these into account as we finalise the full proposal.

Below are some ideas as to what might be included in a letter (but I’ve no doubt you are experienced at writing these so I’m sure you’ll have your own thoughts too – and variation on the format would be good!) We need to collect the letters by Friday 6th February, i.e. in one week, in order to meet the hard deadline for the proposal submission - sorry for the short notice. Your letter can be sent direct to me by email.

Many thanks for considering this (and we look forward to reciprocating in the future!)

myExperiment Enhancement Proposal

[Some words on how thrilled you are to write in support of us. Comment on myExperiment’s international standing in scientific achievements, impact and collaborations.]

I am pleased that an opportunity has risen for the continued funding of the myExperiment project. myExperiment provides an important resource by supporting new types of digital items such as workflows, and has also demonstrated to the community the value of taking a social network approach which facilitates discovery, sharing and curation rather than simply making items available in a repository. The project gives an important insight into supporting the new forms of research practice which are already being adopted by the next generation of researchers. PLEASE REPHRASE THIS IN YOUR LETTER

[Comment on how you have been using myExperiment (and/or working with the myExperiment team) and how you will be doing this in the future.]

My project has been collaborating with the myExperiment team since the project was conceived. We have used myExperiment...

[Explain why it is important to you and the community that this particular proposal be funded. Describe ways in which you are glad to collaborate with myExperiment; e.g. Linking myExperiment together with our repositories/content/tools/services/standards, conducting joint investigations.]

Continued funding of myExperiment will enable us to continue this collaboration and in particular to the enhancements will enable us.... This is very timely as myExperiment has now gathered a significant momentum and this provides an opportunity... More broadly, the proposed work will enable an exploration of myExperiment’s innovations in the wider repository context. We look forward to continuing our collaboration through joint meetings and exchange of ideas, skills and expertise.

I wish you all success with your application.
